Finished joining http://www.goodreads.com/,
and was just thinking about an experience I had recently when I went to Second
Cup. I had gone there specifically to read a book and get one of their great
lattes, and was just about to take a sip and dive into my book when I took a
moment to look around. Some people were there with others, enjoying coffee and
conversation, but I noticed that an awful lot of people were there alone. The
thing they had in common with me is that they were all reading, but of everyone
there, I was the only one reading an actual, old-fashioned paper & print
book. Most were on a computer, a few perusing e-readers; still, I couldn’t help
but thinking, as I settled back to enjoy my good read that they really didn’t
know what they were missing! All the new technologies have their advantages, and
I have availed myself of some of them, but for me nothing compares to the
feeling you get when you settle into a good book (old-school, of course! J).
I hope you like goodreads! When reading on computers and other devices I always find I am so easily distracted. Alerts that I have an email or a message, or the temptation to look something up online always break my concentration. I will always read print books because they have the advantage of being a true escape for me.
ReplyDeleteYes, I can see where that would be a problem! I'm easily distracted when I'm at home, which is why I like to go out to read; I find I can concentrate better in a different environment, and get the escapism I crave :)
